Although the name suggests otherwise, the Bald Eagle is not actually bald. Instead, it is “white-headed”. Being a sea eagle, it preys largely on fish, swooping down to the water and catching them with its powerful talons! Moreover, it builds the largest nest of any North American bird, weighing up to a ton.

Bald Eagles live for around 20 years in the wild, with females being 25% larger in size than males. The Bald Eagle is at the top of its food chain, consuming small fish, tundra swans and other aquatic animals. In 1967, the Bald Eagle faced a threat of extinction and was added to the list of endangered species. Luckily, by 1995, the numbers had recovered sufficiently for it to be out of the danger zone. The world of animals is diverse and unique, with every animal playing a significant role in the ecosystem. When one animal from a food chain becomes extinct, it has consequences on the entire food web.

For instance, if small fish disappeared, what would sea gulls eat? And if sea gulls starved to death, what would eagles eat? Therefore, in order to avoid these cascading effects, it is important to preserve all animals and maintain the biodiversity that exists on Earth.Apart from maintaining ecological balance, animals have many other uses in nature. They are of great help to humans as their body parts can be used to make medicines to cure illnesses. Additionally, animals such as duck and fish are great resources as they provide nutrition to humans, in the form of meat and protein.

Moreover, animals act as companions to humans and provide love and care when people need it. In the 19th century, Florence Nightingale observed small pets bringing comfort to patients of anxiety disorders in the hospital in which she worked. Other similar instances have been recorded.Did you know that the Bald Eagle is one of the most sacred birds in the United States?

It is the United States’ National Bird and National Animal and it features on the Presidential Seal. In many cultures, eagle feathers are used for various ceremonies and for making head dresses. In fact, they are even used to make medicines to treat ailments and diseases. The Bald Eagle is particularly special to the United States as it is a symbol of the strength and freedom of the nation. It reflects the plight of all wildlife that is currently threatened by human activities and serves as a constant reminder for us to preserve biodiversity.
