The garrison is familiar ground for Alan: his family was posted here during the Turkish invasion in 1974, and a decade later after his father became a hero of the Falklands War.

Traumatized and guilt-ridden by an incident in Kosovo in which a young soldier and a Serbian girl died, Alan resigned his commission eleven years ago. Today he is a househusband and part-time tennis coach, conducting a desultory affair with born again Christian Andrea, wife of the Head of Military Police, Major Bill “The Bull” Turner.

When Alan’s youngest child, Lucy, goes missing, he is reassured that an old friend, Chief Inspector Stefanos Papadopoulos, is heading up the investigation jointly with Bill. Events unfold rapidly: a married soldier is implicated, there are indications of Russian mafia involvement, and Alan too becomes a suspect. Finding Stefanos strangely distant and Bill more interested in avenging his wife’s infidelity than in solving the case, Alan takes matters into his own hands. Clues, intuition, and a creeping sense of destiny lead him to the ghost town of Varosha in Turkish occupied northern Cyprus, where international crime-fighting and diplomatic agencies have no jurisdiction.

Alan discovers the kidnapper’s identity and motive. The ramparts of Othello’s Tower provide the spectacular back-drop to a denouement in which Alan finds redemption for past actions and resolves to start his life afresh. Set in the sweltering summer of 2010, this fast paced thriller provides insights into life in the post-imperial, austerity-hit British military, as well as the complex dynamic of relations between Greek, Turkish, British and Russian communities on a small Mediterranean island.
