Excerpt: Agent Robert Nightingale at first appears to be an FBI agent who came to Bright Falls to arrest Alan Wake. Although his precise motivation for his pursuit is uncertain, it is clear that he has discovered the effects of Alans manuscript on future events.

Nightingale is an example of the loose-cannon cop, drunk and trigger happy. On two occasions he tries to shoot at an unarmed Alan, who is standing only a few feet away from civilians. It is evident that he believes that killing Alan Wake is required to stop the terrors which surround him. It is clarified in The Alan Wake Files that Nightingale was acting as a rogue agent in Bright Falls, having been fired from the FBI for unknown reasons prior to the events of Alan Wake.

Clay Steward - the books writer - speculates that Nightingale was drawn to Bright Falls in a similar fashion to how he (Steward) was. The agents past isnt clear at first in the game, but in the novel it is explained through small bits of information. In the past, he had a partner named Flynn, and the two always worked together. They were known as The Righteous Brothers, due to the fact that they never drank and never went against the rules.
